Prof Antony Black

Antony Black is Emeritus Professor of the History of Political Thought at the University of Dundee, where he taught for 40 years.

He has published a world history of ancient political thought, covering Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, Iran, India, China, Greece, Rome and early Christianity, from prehistory to c.300 CE (2009; 2nd revised and expanded edition forthcoming). He has published a complete history of Islamic political thought (2nd edition 2011, 3rd edition forthcoming); and a comparative study of political thought in the West and in the Muslim-ruled world from the origins to the present (2008).

He has previously written on medieval political thought and the history and theory of community. He has self-published a book which places climate change in the context of world history and suggests how we might change the way we live in order to survive (2014).

He is currently working on a global history of political thought up to the present.

Antony Black is married with five children and three grandchildren. His pastimes include hill-walking, Tai Ch’i, growing fruit and vegetables, and real ale.
